The Abandoned Heart
KEY VERSE | Matthew 6:33
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”
In all my years of having a garden I have yet to acquire one that produces fruit all by itself. It takes time. I quickly learned that if I neglect the plants I simply do not get to enjoy any fruit. The same is true in your life—in order to bear the fruits of the Spirit you need to tend to your spiritual life daily. In the book of Mark, Jesus compares us to a seed.
“The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced.” Mark 4:18-19
We hear the Word, and we may even “do” things that are good, but if we are not constantly making an effort to “pull” the thorns or weeds in our daily lives they will quickly choke out the plant. Jesus goes on to list the things that can “choke” the Word.
1. Worries of this life: 1 Peter 5:7 says to, “leave all of your worries with Him because He cares for you.” Don’t spend time worrying about things that may never happen, trust Him to take care of your needs!
2. Deceitfulness or wealth and desires for other things: We are deceived when we are tempted to think wealth and resources will allow us to bear fruit. We are choosing to build our own kingdom instead of His Kingdom.
3. The pursuit of pleasure: Things that bring us pleasure are not bad but they become bad when we place them before God. Seek Him first!
If He is first in your life, you will bear fruit that glorifies the Lord. Nothing starts growing or continues to grow without Him. True growth takes time and every plant produces different fruit so don’t compare your fruit to others. Keep your eyes fixed on Him! We pray that you will take the time to tend to your heart by reading His Word, praying and listening to Him so that you can experience spiritual growth!
