We Are Meant To Flourish

KEY VERSE | John 4:14

“Jesus said, ‘but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’”

Psalm 92:12 says, “the righteous will flourish like a palm tree.” I don’t know about you, but when I think about flourishing plants a palm tree is not what comes to mind! And yet I have noticed that whenever I see news footage from a hurricane there are trees, vehicles and pieces of homes being thrown around and yet the palm trees are left unaffected. So why do palm trees survive the storms they face when others seem to fall down?

Palm trees bend, but do not break because they are monocots, which means they come from one seed, while all other trees come from two seeds. Because they are from only one seed the nutrients go straight up into the tree. This is what gives them the ability to be flexible in a storm. They also have incredibly deep roots so when a storm comes they are not torn apart and blown away. Studies have shown that after a storm their roots actually go down even deeper. They don’t look to the surface for their nutrients but they go directly to the source which is deeply rooted and established.

Like the palm tree, God’s desire for us is to be connected to the only ONE true source. It is often easy to look to our spouse, our jobs or Google to provide us with all that we need. The problem with looking to any of these things as our source is they don’t last. John 4:14 reminds us that only God can be our eternal source. It does not grow tired or weak, God is always faithful.

I love beautiful flowers but they only bloom seasonally. Palm trees are always green because they stay directly connected to their ONE source and they allow storms to strengthen them. As we plan, prepare and above all else, pray for Sparkle 2017, this is our greatest desire for each and every one of you; that you will be more deeply and intimately connected with your heavenly Father so that you will FLOURISH!

RESPONSE | Is Jesus your one true source? If not, what changes do you need to make in your life so that He is?
