We Put Roots Down
KEY VERSE | Colossians 2:7
“Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
A healthy plant is established by a good root system. Did you know that the health of a plant is determined by what is taking place underground? The healthier and deeper the root system, the stronger and healthier the plant above the ground is. Not only is there the original root from the beginning of the plant’s life, but as the root matures, it grows more roots laterally and vertically below the soil line. These roots will be the central lifeline to the plant as they search and collect the nutrients, air and water, delivering up into the stem and leaves so that it can interact with the sunlight, providing the plant with energy.
A sturdy and healthy root system is vital to create the stability and support for the growth above. Healthy roots also release a composition that reacts with the microorganisms in the soil, helping to protect the plant from disease as well as stimulate greater absorption of nutrients and water. The importance of consistent moisture and nutrition is needed for deep and robust roots.
A healthy, flourishing believer is rooted in the Lord. The roots always come first, before the plant is visible. When we spend time regularly reading God’s word, His truth gives us the nutrients to grow laterally and more deeply in our relationship with Jesus, thus driving our growth upwards, bringing Him glory. When we obey God’s word, we experience the depth and breadth of His love and faithfulness, the outpouring of His grace, forgiveness, mercy, joy, peace and protection.
He guides us and reveals His will for our life through the pouring out of the Holy Spirit, to deliver His power through us as we absorb the nutrients rooted in the love of Christ.
